I'm really excited that July is here.  July is my favorite month.  It starts out with America's birthday and ends with my birthday.   I love making Fourth of July cookie because of the simple shapes - stars and rectangles and bold color scheme.  I wanted to make flags but didn't want to make the same old flag I make every year.  Chevron has been huge the last few years and I though it was be a fun twist on the American flag this fourth.  I went to Silhouette to find a chevron pattern and they were thinking the same thing about chevron flags.  You can pick up a FREE chevron flag pattern this week only.  That is what I used as the template to create this design.

I used this old cookie cutter to create the flag but any rectangle cookie cutter will do.   I really can't tell you where it's from, I picked mine up at a garage sale.  I'm sure it could be found on Ebay.   I cut out the pattern with my  Silhouette Portrait.  The pattern can be scaled to fit any size rectangle cookie cutter you have.  If you don't have a Silhouette you can easily use a ruler and draw a chevron to fit.   I laid out the the chevrons and then traced them with red food coloring marker.    After the pattern was on the cookie I used red icing and pipe along the pattern I drew on.   Once the red was dry I filled in the white areas.  Then I piped and filled in the blue part of the flag.

The next day when the blue was dry I could move on to the stars.  I was originally going to pipe white stars on the cookies, but decided to spray them on with silver.   It went much quicker and I didn't have to wait for any icing to dry.   These cookies are pretty simple to make and will be a huge hit at any Fourth of July party.
