Unicorn Project - Terrarium
I love to garden and I get that from my dad. We would always have a garden when I was growing up. One of my fondest memories is picking cherry tomatoes off the vine and eating them. We don't have a ton of space for a garden at our condo. We choose a few things each year to grow in our Earth Boxes and that works for us. I also have house plants in every room of our house from money trees to succulents. I love having something growing in our home.
Terrariums are all over Esty and Pinterest these day. I came across this kit to create your own unicorn terrarium. I really wanted to turn this idea into a cookie. I used this cutter to make the top portion of the terrarium. For the birch tree bottom, I hand-cut out a rectangle and combined the two cookies pre-baking.
I started by piping and flooding the rectangle with white icing. Once it dried, I used a black food coloring marker to draw on lines. I also outlined the top portion of the terrarium. Then I created the moss following this tutorial from Mike over at Semi Sweet. He used graham crackers but I didn't want to open a whole package for two cookies, so I used honey graham cereal. I had to bake mine because it ended up being very soggy. I piped and flooded a green section and covered it with the moss.
I flooded the top portion white and once it was dry, I airbrushed it blue. To make the unicorn, I created royal icing transfer. I felt trying to pipe on top of the moss would create an uneven looking unicorn. I made six transfers hoping to be able to get two that wouldn't break. I piped icing on the back of the transfer and carefully placed it on top of the moss. The final touch was adding the grey rock.
