Firefiles
Look it's not a unicorn! I do make other cookies. Summer is not over yet, even though all the kids in Arizona have gone back to school. I want to squeeze in some fun summer cookies before September and pumpkin season rolls around.
I love this Ball Jar cutter. It's so versatile - I've use it to create so many great cookies. I was thinking of how I could use the jar for summer cookies other than with flowers. Fireflies or as my Dad calls them, lighting bugs, pop into my head. It's the quintessential picture of a summer evening, kids with Ball jars in hand running out to the nearby field at twilight to catch fireflies. I remember seeing fireflies a few times when my family would vacation in northern Minnesota. It's a beautiful sight.
I stated off by piping and flooding the lid of the jar white. Once the icing dried, I airbrushed the lid with silver. Next, I piped and flooded the jar with light blue icing. While the blue icing was still wet, I piped on the yellow dots (two larger dots and two smaller dots). My yellow icing bled into the blue. In most cases I would have trashed the cookies and started over, but with these cookies it works. The bleeding gives the fireflies the look of glowing. I would like to say I planned it that way, but I didn't. Sometime the cookie gods bless you! Once the jar section was dry, I used black icing to pipe on the body and wings. I used a lighter blue icing to pipe a line on the jar to create dimension.
