Today is our six year wedding anniversary (man time flies).  Back in July when Kyle and I were on my birthday vacation, we stopped at Oregon Caves National Monument.  In the gift shop they had many different Viewmasters. The idea of the Viewmaster formed at Oregon Caves by two camera buffs.  They later went on to produce the Viewmaster in Portland.  When I saw all the different Viewmasters, I immediately thought of making reel cookies.  When Kyle asked what I was making the cookies for I said "For our anniversary, because we have 'reel' love."  He laughed at me. 

Above is the template I used to make the viewfinder reels.  Here is one similar to the one I used.  I printed it out on cardstock and cut out the little windows with an X-acto knife. 

Then I placed the template on the cookie and traced it on with food coloring marker. 

This is what the cookie looked like after I had finished tracing.  I didn't trace the little rectangles in between every two windows because I felt the design I was doing didn't need them.

I wanted the black window portions to look as if they were under the upper layer.  I took black icing and piped a small dot in the center of each window.  The icing was 15 seconds or so.  I could spread it, but it wasn't running everywhere. 

Next, I used a small knife or scribe tool to spread out the icing very thin.  I tried to stay within the drawn windows, but wasn't too concerned if I got outside the lines.  

I allowed the black icing to dry overnight.  The next day I used light blue icing to pipe around the outside of each window and around the outside of the circle. Then I flooded the cookies.  Once the icing dried, I drew our initials and a heart on the cookies with food coloring marker and piped over them with red icing.
