Dia de los Muertos is about honoring our deceased loved ones. This year I feel more of a connection to this celebration with the recent passing of my Grandmother. Working on cookies these past few weeks has helped me focus my grief towards something positive.
The sugar skull cutter that I used was from Sweet Sugarbelle. I received mine in my Cookie Con swag bag and have been waiting since March to use it. If you search for the set, you can find a few different sellers. The set comes with two different skull temples which helps keep things symmetrical, which I like. I used the template to layout the eyes and nose with a food coloring marker. Then I thinned some black royal icing and painted on a thin layer. Once the black was dry, I piped and flooded the white and added the eye balls. It's hard to tell in the photograph but I piped on the lips to add dimension. The flowers were white royal icing roses that I airbrushed different colors. The majority of the details I painted on by hand.
