Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays. When I lived in Minnesota, I would host a big Memorial Day BBQ every year. I always looked forward to Memorial Day with great anticipation to the kick off to the summer. The best time of year!
This year Kyle and I were invited to a Memorial Day BBQ. We were asked to bring something. Can you guess what I brought? I made a red and blue round cake and layered them with vanilla buttercream. I'm not very good at decorating cakes, I thought of using cookies to achieve a patriotic look. I imagined the bunting going around the sides with the little stars, and the plaque and bigger stars on top of the cake. Well, the round sides of the cake and the flat bunting cookies didn't like each other. I just used the stars and the plaque on the cake. To make the bunting cookies, I used a scolloped circle and cut it in half. I used a ruffle tip #101 with very thick icing to pipe the bunting. Everyone at BBQ enjoyed the cake.
Many people celebrate Memorial Day by visiting a cemetery to place flowers and flags on the graves of family member's that served in the armed forces. Red, white and blue bouquets popped into my head and I wanted to turn my idea into a cookie. The cutter I used to make these cookies can be purchased here. I have the 3.5 inch cutter. Most of the flowers I used are pre-made either by me or ones I purchased. The red, white and blue royal icing flowers at the top of the photo below are from P&H Pfeil and Holing. They offer a wide variety of royal icing flowers. Wilton has some rainbow daisies that I used too. I made the ribbon roses and light blue violets. I gathered all the flowers I wanted to before I started icing my cookies.
I started out by spreading thicker green icing. Then I started placing the flowers on. I placed the larger flowers first, then filled in with smaller ones. To make it look like smaller flowers are behind the larger, I broke the smaller flowers in half and nestled them in next to the larger. To build more dimension, I placed flowers on top of other flowers. I flooded the tin can portion white and piped the lines on. Once it was dry, I used bronze and silver to paint the can.
