Skylander? You might be asking what it is. Don't worry, I had NO idea what it was either. It's a video game set in a place called Skylands, filled with magic and floating islands. Each Skylander character is associated with one of these eight elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Magic, Tech, Life, or Undead. I don't have kids so it's always interesting to see what they're into with cookie requests.
When I first starting researching these cookies, the symbols cookies were the only ones I could find that somebody had already made. This was the place I found them but the site doesn't credit who made the cookies. I used a three inch circle cookie cutter. I thought about making the base white and the design the corresponding color, but didn't do it. I didn't think the designs would "pop" as much. I found a free printable of the symbols here. I printed and cut them out and then used a food coloring marker to trace the design on each cookie. I piped over the tracing with white icing.
When I first looked at the characters, I realized there are hundreds of them. I had no idea which ones to make but the client had a few in mind. One of the things about character cookies is their shape. Most of the time I hand-cut them. This time, most of the charters worked with some of my existing cookie cutters. Shroomboom (the yellow guy with his tongue sticking out) was made with a tombstone cookie cutter. For Eye-brawl (the one with the large eye), I combined a circle and a Halloween bat. Pop Fizz (blue guy in the front) was made from a Easter bunny head. I tried using a heart for Tree-Rex (brown guy in the middle) but in the end had to hand-cut him. I didn't think I would have fun making these cookies. I always worry about making characters. I had SO much fun making these cookies because they were something different and unexpected.
